Neyland Sisters’ Chocolate Pie

Chocolate Pie Recipe

This is an old recipe that is not the expected chocolate pie of the cafeterias, restaurants, and frozen food sections of our day.  This custard-like pie is a childhood favorite of mine.

My mother’s hand-written copy is posted here.  Momma wrote on the back of the recipe card: “This is the chocolate pie of my childhood. – Ellen Richardine Acton Evans (Mrs, James DeWitte Evans).

Mine, too, Momma!

P.S. Notice her lovely cursive handwriting!

Place in unbaked pie crust this filling:

  • Start with 3 well-beaten eggs.
  • Stir into the eggs a mixture of
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 heaping Tablespoon flour
  • Add 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  • Melt 2 Tablespoons butter, to which add 1 1/2 cup sweet milk.
  • Mix butter and milk into remainder of the filling.

Bake at 350 degrees Farenheit for 45 minutes or “until it does not shake.

As my Aunt Zelma Neyland Scarborough told me [Momma], “Place your pie in the refrigerator later.  Give a child a piece in his hands to eat as he runs outside to play.”
